  • Wide camera shots exposed the limits of Apple's iPhone 17 Pro soccer broadcast Mon, 25 May 2026 15:10:37 +0000
Apple's first live soccer broadcast shot entirely on iPhone impressed viewers with close-up camera work during the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC match, but the experiment also exposed the limits of smartphone cameras during fast-moving gameplay.

Apple placed iPhone 17 Pro units throughout Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, for the LA Galaxy and Houston Dynamo FC Major League Soccer match on May 24. The phones handled match coverage, tunnel footage, in-goal cameras, player introductions, and crowd shots.

Reaction during and after the match largely centered on the strengths and weaknesses of using smartphones for live sports coverage compared to traditional broadcast cameras.

  • The last macOS Tahoe review -- neither terrible nor great Mon, 25 May 2026 10:57:28 +0000
Apple's macOS Tahoe has been one of the most controversial and divisive Mac updates ever. After almost a year of use, not even including Apple Intelligence, some of its touted benefits haven't worked out.

Colorful macOS Tahoe concept wallpaper with large translucent Tahoe text and dock-style icons for Finder, apps grid, phone, and infinity symbol on a soft blue abstract background
Apple's macOS Tahoe is good, it's just not as revolutionary as advertised

Maybe this is just how it always is. For instance, when macOS Big Sur was announced, it was a gigantic change for the Mac yet now you can't even remember what was so new about it.

With macOS Tahoe, you do know that the chief new thing is the Liquid Glass redesign. It seems as if there are more critics of the design than there are proponents, but it's probably more that most users don't care enough to comment.

In this week's "Sunday Reboot," Apple shoots soccer with iPhones, Epic Games misses the mark with its messaging, and Plex's astounding price rise.

Sunday Reboot is a weekly column covering some of the lighter stories within the Apple reality distortion field from the past seven days. All to get the next week underway with a good first step.

This week, Apple faced protests over the closure of the Apple Towson Town Center store, the first unionized store. It also elected to continue the never-ending lawsuit with Epic Games via the Supreme Court, and it turns out some server schematics were stolen in the May cyberattack of Foxconn.

  • AirPods will be easier to manage with iOS 27 controls revamp Sun, 24 May 2026 16:50:37 +0000
AirPods users will see different personal audio controls in iOS 27, with an improved settings menu that should make them easier to manage.

While AirPods don't really have an operating system that gets featured at WWDC, the audio line can still be affected by changes. For WWDC 2026, that will involve iOS 27 as well as iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

According to Mark Gurman in Sunday's "Power On" newsletter for Bloomberg, Apple will be altering how the AirPods are controlled within the operating systems. A revamp for the settings menu will apparently make it more functional and better organized.

  • Google's 'Cast to TV' could join AirPlay on iPhones thanks to EU regulations Sun, 24 May 2026 15:49:11 +0000
Apple will be adding support for Google Cast and other alternatives to AirPlay as part of iOS 27, in order to appease the EU's Digital Markets Act.

The Digital Markets Act is viewed by Apple as a problem, due to a lack of clarity about regulatory requirements and their effects. While this has so far meant the blocking of some features from reaching the continent, Apple is meeting halfway by abiding by some elements.

One of those will apparently be a change to iOS 27 for connecting to other devices. While Apple already has AirPlay for that, it will be moving to add more support for other solutions.

  • Apple's worst AI feature to get a 'big boost' with upgraded Apple Foundation Models Sun, 24 May 2026 15:25:15 +0000
Generative AI is not Apple's strong suit, but Image Playground, the tool responsible for horrific AI avatar generation and Genmoji, should see significant improvements with the OS 27 cycle.

Image Playground will generate images based on provided photos and other inputs, but the results leave a lot to be desired

Apple announced Apple Intelligence features that had to be delayed in 2024, and one of them should have been Image Playground. While the other AI tools were of passable usefulness and quality, the image generation tool still leaves a lot to be desired.

According to the "Power On" newsletter from Bloomberg, the Image Playground app should see a "big boost" from Apple's upgraded Apple Foundation Models. It's an obvious statement given that Gemini is being distilled into Apple's models, and one of Gemini's specialties is image generation.

  • Heart rate tracking improvements are about all that's expected in watchOS 27 Sun, 24 May 2026 14:58:08 +0000
The WWDC updates for watchOS 27 are expected to be minimal thanks to Apple's stability focus. However, Apple is rumored to be improving the heart-rate tracking with the new fall update.

The WWDC 2026 keynote is a few weeks away, and the excitement is all about AI and iOS 27's changes. While you can expect some tweaks to watchOS 27, it seems like there won't be that many visible changes on the way.

In Sunday's "Power On" newsletter for Bloomberg, the watchOS update will focus on stability, performance, and refinements. There will be changes, but most will be to improve the existing features rather than add new ones to the software.

  • 'GenAI' Apple subdomain surfaces weeks ahead of WWDC Sun, 24 May 2026 12:03:15 +0000
A new Gen AI subdomain has been found for Apple's website, with the domain's appearance solidifying AI as one of the major topics at WWDC in June.

Apple's annual WWDC event is set to start on June 8, with its keynote setting the tone for the rest of the year. While Apple is secretive as usual about what will be mentioned, one web-based change has practically confirmed one of the most likely topics.

A new subdomain for genai.apple.com has been found, reports MacRumors. Attempts to load the subdomain comes up with connection time-out messages, indicating that it has been registered but not configured for its final server destination.

  • Google's $20B Safari search deal with Apple was 'fair and square' Sat, 23 May 2026 14:54:01 +0000
The $20B search engine preference deal with Apple was "fair and square," Google insists in its antitrust appeal against the Department of Justice.

In August 2024, a court ruled that Google was a monopolist in the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit against Alphabet. One that involved an investigation into Google's $20 billion deal with Apple to make Google the preferred search engine of Safari.

On May 22, Google filed its appeal against federal rulings that it held illegal monopolies in search and advertising.

  • FCC filing confirms more Apple headphones on the way Sat, 23 May 2026 12:17:29 +0000
An FCC filing lists a pair of unreleased Apple over-ear headphones as on the way, but it's more likely to be a Beats product than an AirPods Max stablemate.

Occasionally, unannounced Apple products surface through regulatory filings as they undergo testing and other necessary tasks before going on sale. While these filings can often provide a lot of clues about what Apple has planned, they can sometimes raise more questions than answers.

A filing at the Federal Communications Commission found by @Aaronp613 and spotted by MacRumors on Friday are for a pair of "Bluetooth over-ear headphones." The report, dated May 5, 2026, identifies Apple as the company behind the tested product.

  • iPhone 18 color 'leak' from fake account appears to be camera protector, not component Fri, 22 May 2026 20:28:48 +0000
The latest "leak" from someone impersonating a now-defunct leaker appears to be nothing more than painted lens covers, especially considering the modern iPhone design has a unibody case.

Floating orange iPhone 17 Pro Max frame with large circular cutout, exposed internal cavities, and triple rear camera housing against a dark background, highlighting sleek metallic edges and minimal side buttons
iPhone 17 Pro Max has a unibody rear case. Note the design of the plateau here.

Majin Bu was once a prominent Apple leaker who had some accurate leaks. After attempting to sell cases for an unreleased iPhone, the leaker disappeared, and a copycat has risen in its stead.

It still isn't clear to me why anyone is covering the clearly fake account, but 9to5Mac shared the latest post about iPhone colors. The publication did call out the potential of the account being fake, but it did serve the post as possible thanks to corroborating previous color rumors.

  • Apple's AI spend remains flat as OpenAI loses $1.25 for every $1 Fri, 22 May 2026 19:08:06 +0000
As OpenAI prepares an IPO, information suggests it is bleeding money. Apple, on the other hand, continues to benefit from AI without all of the spend.

If you didn't predict it already, you could sense that AI was past its sell-by date when you watched the 2026 Google I/O conference. Half the hyped new technologies seemed worthless or at best old hat, and half were yet again preposterous exaggerations about saving the human race from something or other.

What never changes is that AI is both said to be this staggering technology right now and, if you press a little, to well, no, it isn't, but it's going to be someday. You just have to believe, and to spend money.
