  • Select US carriers introduce support for RCS on iOS 18 beta Tue, 25 Jun 2024 22:52:10 +0000
The second developer beta of iOS 18 introduced a toggle for RCS in Messages, and now select US carriers have made RCS available to users running the beta.

Top portion of a smartphone screen showing message settings with RCS and MMS messaging toggled on and Show Subject Field toggled off
RCS is now available on iOS 18 beta 2, but only through select US carriers

The introduction of RCS support from both Apple and carriers means that users will now have the option to send rich text messages with audio, read receipts, and media files to devices running Android. Users of social media platform X discovered the limited availability of this feature earlier on Tuesday.

As iOS 18 beta 2 only contains updated carrier bundles for three major US carriers — AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon — iPhone users will only be able to use RCS on these three networks for the time being. If your carrier supports RCS on iPhone, you can activate it by navigating to Settings > Apps > Messages and toggling the option for RCS.

  • Apple working out how to use Mac in parallel with iPhone or iPad to process big jobs Tue, 25 Jun 2024 15:08:41 +0000
Apple isn't content with the existing distributed computing technologies, and is working on a way to network your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and maybe even the Apple Vision Pro together to combine processing jobs dynamically according to device power, to get a big calculation done faster.

In a newly published patent, Apple has detailed what it wants to see in the future as it pertains to using all of your devices for computations, simultaneously, an seamlessly. If the research pans out as published, this would radically improve performance for some tasks, and automatically take into consideration the varying power from each device.

For example, an idle iPad could make a photo edit or 3D render faster. Or, a Mac could improve the experience on an Apple Vision Pro by sharing the processing of tasks.

  • Taiwan press talks up iffy rumor about a new local Apple datacenter Tue, 25 Jun 2024 14:16:13 +0000
Taiwan press venues are circulating rumors of a new Apple datacenter coming that don't appear to be based on anything, making claims of a $14 billion benefit to the country's economy questionable, at best.

Apple does build data centers — or tries to — and recently it has been reported to be working on AI processors for such data centers. So rumors amongst the technology industry in Taiwan that Apple is to build a data center in the country are theoretically possible.

It can't be absolutely counted out, but the report in Money.UDM literally says it is based on optimism. That optimism within the country's technology sector is based on how Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Amazon AWS have at least made similar plans.

  • Claude 3.5 suggests AI’s looming ubiquity could be a good thing Tue, 25 Jun 2024 10:45:40 GMT

In this week’s newsletter: If you don’t like chatbots popping up everywhere, get ready to be peeved. But the latest version of Anthropic’s shows AI is becoming more useful – and, crucially, affordable

The frontier of AI just got pushed a little further forward. On Friday, Anthropic, the AI lab set up by a team of disgruntled OpenAI staffers, released the latest version of its Claude LLM. From Bloomberg:

The company said Thursday that the new model – the technology that underpins its popular chatbot Claude – is twice as fast as its most powerful previous version. Anthropic said in its evaluations, the model outperforms leading competitors like OpenAI on several key intelligence capabilities, such as coding and text-based reasoning.

It shows marked improvement in grasping nuance, humor, and complex instructions, and is exceptional at writing high-quality content with a natural, relatable tone.

As part of our commitment to safety and transparency, we’ve engaged with external experts to test and refine the safety mechanisms within this latest model. We recently provided Claude 3.5 Sonnet to the UK’s Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (UK AISI) for pre-deployment safety evaluation. The UK AISI completed tests of 3.5 Sonnet and shared their results with the US AI Safety Institute (US AISI) as part of a Memorandum of Understanding, made possible by the partnership between the US and UK AISIs announced earlier this year.

  • Apple found in breach of EU competition rules Mon, 24 Jun 2024 10:07:41 GMT

European Commission finds iPhone maker broke new laws designed to protect smaller competitors against big tech platforms

Apple has been found to be in breach of sweeping new EU laws designed to allow smaller companies to compete and allow consumers to find cheaper and alternative apps in the tech business’s app store.

The European Commission, which also acts as the EU antitrust and technology regulator, said it had sent its preliminary findings to Apple after an investigation launched in March.

“For too long Apple has been squeezing out innovative companies — denying consumers new opportunities and choices,” said Thierry Breton, the European commissioner responsible for digital markets, on X.

In preliminary findings, against which Apple can appeal, the European Commission said it believed its rules of engagement did not comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA) “as they prevent app developers from freely steering consumers to alternatives channels for offers and content”.

  • Does what happens on your iPhone still stay on your iPhone? Tue, 18 Jun 2024 11:09:59 GMT

Apple’s famous slogan that suggested total privacy is being tested in the age of AI. Plus: is it time to give up on smartphones all together?

AI is power-hungry, and that’s causing problems for Apple.

We’re still working through the ramifications of the company’s worldwide developers conference, where it revealed how it intends to incorporate AI into your daily life – but only, for the most part, if your daily life involves a brand new iPhone:

Apple’s new AI models will run on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, the only two devices the company has yet shipped with its A17 processor. Macs up to three years old will also be able to take advantage of the upgrade, provided they have a M1, 2 or 3 chip, and so too will iPad Pros with the same internal hardware.

At the core of Apple’s privacy assurances regarding AI is its new Private Cloud Compute technology. Apple seeks to do most computer processing to run Apple Intelligence features on devices. But for functions that require more processing than the device can handle, the company will outsource processing to the cloud while “protecting user data”, Apple executives said on Monday.

To accomplish this, Apple will only export data required to fulfil each request, create additional security measure around the data at each end point, and not store data indefinitely. Apple will also publish all tools and software related to the private cloud publicly for third-party verification, executives said.

  • Accessible and ‘a pleasure to read’: how Apple’s podcast transcriptions came to be Sat, 15 Jun 2024 07:00:16 GMT

Apple rolled out a feature highly requested by both disabled users and podcast creators. Why did it take so long?

Ren Shelburne was fed up with trying to listen to popular podcast episodes her friends recommended. Shelburne, a photographer with partial hearing loss and an auditory processing condition, remembers struggling to finish a particular episode. It was a specific type of show: too many talking heads, complicated overlapping dialogue and, until recently, no transcription. “Those I’m just so lost on because there’s just too much going on at once,” Shelburne says. She couldn’t follow along, so she couldn’t discuss the show with her friends. “Podcasts are such a big part of pop culture and media at this point. I want to be able to be a part of that conversation.”

Weekly podcast listenership in the United States has more than quadrupled in the past decade, according to Pew Research. For some, though, the medium still feels inaccessible.

  • ChatGPT is coming to your iPhone. These are the four reasons why it’s happening far too early | Chris Stokel-Walker Thu, 13 Jun 2024 11:00:20 GMT

The AI’s errors can still be comical and catastrophic. Do we really want this technology to be in so many pockets?

Tech watchers and nerds like me get excited by tools such as ChatGPT. They look set to improve our lives in many ways – and hopefully augment our jobs rather than replace them.

But in general, the public hasn’t been so enamoured of the AI “revolution”. Make no mistake: artificial intelligence will have a transformative effect on how we live and work – it is already being used to draft legal letters and analyse lung-cancer scans. ChatGPT was also the fastest-growing app in history after it was released. That said, four in 10 Britons haven’t heard of ChatGPT, according to a recent survey by the University of Oxford, and only 9% use it weekly or more frequently.

  • How Apple plans to usher in ‘new privacy standards’ with its long-awaited AI Thu, 13 Jun 2024 07:00:21 GMT

Company maintains its in-house AI is made with security in mind, but some professionals say ‘it remains to be seen’

At its annual developers conference on Monday, Apple announced its long-awaited artificial intelligence system, Apple Intelligence, which will customize user experiences, automate tasks and – the CEO Tim Cook promised – will usher in a “new standard for privacy in AI”.

While Apple maintains its in-house AI is made with security in mind, its partnership with OpenAI has sparked plenty of criticism. OpenAI tool ChatGPT has long been the subject of privacy concerns. Launched in November 2022, it collected user data without explicit consent to train its models, and only began to allow users to opt out of such data collection in April 2023.

  • Why passwords still matter in the age of AI Tue, 11 Jun 2024 10:46:41 GMT

As Apple’s new Passwords app tries to solve our identity crisis, why are we still proving who we are via strings of random characters?

Whether it stands for artificial intelligence or, er, Apple intelligence, AI is the hot news of the day. Which is why I think it’s time to talk about [sits backwards on chair] passwords.

It may have been buried in the reporting of last night’s Apple event – which the inestimable Kari Paul and Nick Robins-Early covered for us from Cupertino and New York – but one of the more consequential changes coming to the company’s platforms in the next year is the creation of a new Passwords app.

The average user probably has never heard of 1Password or LastPass, and they may or may not be aware that the iPhone can automatically create and store passwords for them. For users like that, a new Passwords app showing up on their iPhone’s Home screen this fall is going to hopefully lead them to a more secure computing future.

A mild improvement in your daily life. That’s what Apple, Google and Microsoft are offering, with a fairly rare triple announcement that the three tech giants are all adopting the Fido standard and ushering in a passwordless future. The standard replaces usernames and passwords with ‘passkeys’, log-in information stored directly on your device and only uploaded to the website when matched with biometric authentication like a selfie or fingerprint.

At around 11pm last night my partner went to change our lounge room lights with our home light control system. When she tried to login, her account couldn’t be accessed. Her Apple Keychain had deleted the Passkey she was using on that site … Just like adblockers, I predict that Passkeys will only be used by a small subset of the technical population, and consumers will generally reject them.

Zoom users in the not-too-distant future could send AI avatars to attend meetings in their absence, the company’s chief executive has suggested, delegating the drudge-work of corporate life to a system trained on their own content.

I’m just a bit into the game, but it’s really something to enjoy if you’re looking for a low-key and relaxing way to solve puzzles. The animation is just spectacular, and I’m excited to see how the story progresses.

  • 5 Best High-Speed Games Wed, 12 Jun 2024 16:30:22 -0700

Games have a wide variety of difficulty levels ranging from super easy to super hard. This list is composed of games on the latter end of the spectrum. You will need split second reaction time to handle the obstacles of each of these games. Super Hexagon essentially created a genre of high speed challenges that will result in multiple fails. You may lose in mere seconds, but you can restart just as quickly. These games can be tunnel or track based, but the style is the same, to punish the player with extremely difficult set ups.

We hope you have split-second reaction time to handle these high-speed games.

    Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon sees you twitching rapidly to rotate your triangle through a swirling maze of geometric action. Your task is to escape the maze, but the swirling shapes move ever faster. You’ll find yourself supremely challenged by this game, and your blood will pump faster as you try to make your way out of the traps.

Super Hexagon is a geometric puzzler, and a fast-moving one at that. You need to guide your triangle out of the maze of rotating hexagons, while the music spurs you to move quickly as the puzzle rotates faster and faster around you. This is adrenaline-pumping fun at its finest.

Swirling walls close in around you and you race to escape the contracting maze. With the geometric action heaping on the punishment (the easiest difficulty is appropriately labeled “Hard”), every small achievement feels like a massive victory, whether you’re topping your high score or overcoming a singularly tricky section. Super Hexagon is basically for anyone looking for a challenge.

The game is a $2.99 download for the iPhone and iPad.

    Thumper: Pocket Edition

Thumper: Pocket Edition is a rhythm violence game where you must help a space beetle overcome the challenges that await in a high octane adventure.

Thumper’s visuals are stunningly beautiful. The game has some psychedelic graphics that feel incredibly futuristic, and everything is rendered in gorgeous 3D. Thumper’s dark background is excellently contrasted by the bright and vivid neon lights of the track and sparks, and the space beetle is super shiny and glassy. Explosions are high-octane and fun to watch while being highly satisfying. Thumper runs at a smooth 60 frames per second, even on my iPhone 8 Plus, so there’s zero lag.

The game is incredibly challenging, but you’ll find yourself getting better over time. You’re bound to die a lot (you can only make one mistake before you end up dead on the next error), but you’ll keep coming back to do better. And once you overcome that hurdle, it’s immensely gratifying.

An iPhone and iPad game, you can download it for $4.99.

    Unpossible

Unpossible is a fast paced, sci-fi obstacle avoidance tube racing game. It challenges you to avoid obstacles as you traverse a “Tron”-esque tube from a first-person perspective. As you go, the game effectively tests your skills, your reflexes, and even your memory.

The aim in Unpossible is to control a futuristic vehicle that’s traveling along a track which continually twists and turns. Along the way, countless barriers will block your path, and you’ll need to tap or tilt left or right in order to steer your machine around each obstacle.

Unlike other twitch games, though, Unpossible is designed to be fun for players of all skill levels. It features a range of game modes with levels that are designed to be fun and fair in their challenges. It also offers gaming flexibility as it’s playable with touch, tilt or external controls.

For the iPhone and iPad, the game is a $1.99 download.

    Barrier X

BARRIER X is a super fast and challenging twitch reflex arcade game that tests how fast you can dodge walls.

In BARRIER X, players control a small ship that will be flying down a rather large stretch of empty, barren road. Walls will appear randomly and rather quickly, so you must tap on the screen to change lanes to avoid them. But watch out — the game speeds up every 15 seconds, meaning the walls come up faster and faster as you play. You’ll need to be fast to avoid crashing into the walls or other obstacles. Your score is determined by how long you managed to survive before crashing. Do you think you’re fast enough to survive?

BARRIER X is another twitchy reflex arcade game and we certainly can’t get enough of those. The game itself looks fantastic with the minimalistic aesthetics, and it is very challenging and gives you a good reason to come back and beat your time for a better score.

The game is a free download for the iPhone and all iPad models. A $1.99 in-app purchase will disable all of the ads.

    A Hollow Doorway

Rotate doorways at high speeds to continue to align them with new ones upcoming in A Hollow Doorway.

The game is reminiscent of Super Hexagon, but with rectangular shapes. Slide your finger to adjust the angle, as the rectangles keep expanding outward. You can select to play nine levels with an infinite array of difficulty modes.

The free iPhone and iPad game also features in-app purchases to remove ads and free-to-play elements.

  • 5 Best Choice-Based Adventure Games Tue, 11 Jun 2024 17:20:56 -0700

Adventure games come in numerous shapes and sizes, but there are none quite like the ones that let you decide how the adventure proceeds. TellTale has a distinct 3D cinematic style, but choice based adventure games also come in numerous styles. It all comes down to deciding how the story continues with forking pathways, fluid structure, and lasting choices. These games are thought provoking, and will last in your memory long after you have completed them. There is even a chance to replay to change your decisions to see what happens.

    The Walking Dead: Michonne

The Walking Dead: Michonne is an installment in the episodic adventure game series developed by Telltale Games, based on the acclaimed “The Walking Dead” comic book series created by Robert Kirkman. It centers on the “untold journey” of Michonne, an iconic character from the comic book series who’s “haunted by her past and coping with unimaginable loss and regret.” Specifically, it explores the title character’s absence from Issues No. 126 to No. 139 of the comic book series.

Typical of Telltale’s games, The Walking Dead: Michonne is a cinematic interactive adventure game of choice and consequence, where every decision the player makes influences the flow of the story. In this three-part miniseries, players will tap and swipe to kill zombies and ultimately find out what separated Michonne from and what brought her back to her trusted group.

The iPhone and iPad game is free to download with the entire game unlockable with in-app purchases.

    The Wolf Among Us

If you enjoy dark and moody comic books, you’re in for a treat. Telltale has done a fantastic job bringing Bill Willingham’s popular comic book series to life. Interact with the real world versions of well known tales in a gritty world.

As Bigby the Wolf, you will dissever a brutal murder. All of your choices will have consequences

The free download provides Episode 1 to play on your iPhone or iPad. The final four are available with in-app purchases.

    Her Story

Watch the interrogation footage, and try to figure out what happened in Her Story.

An interactive crime drama with an aesthetic designed around a mid-90s computer that shows archived cassette tape style footage. In Her Story, your job is to comb through all of the archived footage by typing out specific words to find matching clips. Every video clip delivers live action content that is well performed as the actress really embraces the role, and the setting.

A lot of time went into recording the over 250 videos, and the game makes it an extremely compelling way to discover them as you watch the videos based on search, and not chronological order. Her Story is a completely unique experience that is more than an interactive movie as you guide the flow of the narrative. It’s great to watch this intricate character develop one minute at a time with no particular order to the findings you come across.

The iPhone and iPad game is a $1.99 download.

    Reigns

A card-based adventure in which you swipe either left or right to make various decisions that a king could come across. With every decision that you make, you need to be cognizant of the impact on the church, the people, the army, and the treasury. The goal is to constantly balance the four aspects of your kingdom, as if any of them reach the bottom or top, your reign will end. You get to play through the timeline of modern history with each strategic decision determining how long each given reign will last.

The graphics are great, the music and sound effects are fun and soothing, voiceovers are humorous, and the modern gameplay makes you think.

For the iPhone and iPad, the game is $2.99. It’s also available on Apple Arcade.

    Papers, Please

You get to play as a border inspector in the communist state of Arstotzka, and your goal is to check travelers documents for any discrepancies. Papers, Please is the question you ask to each new visitor as you weed through proper immigrants, and visitors looking to find smugglers, spies, and terrorists.

There’s an ornately crafted world to experience that puts you in a retro inspired dystopian world filled with asides based on Cold War ideals. Each day gives you a new batch of potential immigrants to sort through, and you have to go through the documents with a fine tooth comb to identify potential threats. Papers, Please creates an immersive experience in a fully fleshed out environment that is a must have app.

It’s a $4.99 download for the iPhone and iPad.

  • Lords Mobile’s Latest Collab Event Features Characters from THE KING OF FIGHTERS XV Wed, 05 Jun 2024 17:32:28 -0700

Lords Mobile, the blockbuster strategy MMO from developer IGG, has taken on a dangerous partner for its latest collaboration event.

Throughout June and July, Lords Mobile is in the ring with SNK’s THE KING OF FIGHTERS XV the latest in the legendary beat ‘em up series starring a roster of impossibly tough martial artists.

Kyo Kusanagi and Mai Shiranui are the combatants making their way to the Kingdoms of Athena, and they’re looking to settle some scores, bang some heads, and distribute some sweet, sweet rewards.

During the event you’ll be able to claim a huge array of exclusive items, including Leader Skins, Castle Skins, Collab Avatars, Collab Emotes, a Guild Frame, and a selection of Artifacts.

There are all sorts of activities, too, including the Fighter’s Stadium—where you can earn exclusive rewards by collecting and piecing together photo fragments. These rewards include the Arcade Adventure Castle Skin, the Mai Shiranui Castle Skin, and more.

The Fighter’s Gym, meanwhile, dishes out items such as the Kyo Kusanagi Leader Skin, the Championship Belt, the Power Gloves, and more in exchange for Fighter’s Emblems.

Then there are the events themselves held on the official collaboration website.

At various points throughout the two-month collaboration you’ll be able to take part in time-limited events, the first of which begins on June 6th.

The Homecoming event, set to run from June 6th to June 19th, is an opportunity to win gift cards by inviting former allies (i.e. friends who haven’t played for a while) to return to the fray.

Fighters Faction War begins on June 13th and ends on June 17th. On each of those five days you’ll be able to complete specific quests in order to launch attacks on behalf of your faction and rake in tons of juicy rewards.

Next up, Fighters Puzzle. This one takes place between June 25th and June 30th, and sees you collecting puzzle pieces by completing quests. Finishing a puzzle nets you Fighter’s Blessing, and you can get additional Bonus Fighter’s Gift by taking on bonus quests.

At the end of this event, a lucky player will win the Fighter’s Bundle, which consists of a selection of physical prizes including a Pillow Hugging Figure set, an Oath Keeper figure, and a selection of branded items like an electric toothbrush, a keyboard and mouse set, and a vinyl record.

Last up, there’s THE KING OF FIGHTERS XV Showdown, which runs from July 17th to July 28th.

There will be three rounds over that period, each one letting you complete quests in order to earn points. The top 100 guilds will each receive an exclusive collab Guild Frame.

You can download Lords Mobile for free on the App Store, Google Play Store, and PC.

Check out the game’s Facebook page and Discord channel to stay in the loop.
